There's Even An App For That
We use our smartphones for virtually everything these days—appointments, e-mail, photography, social media, entertainment, shopping, summoning a taxi, ordering food—the list goes on and on. In many cases, the mobile phone now replaces the personal computer as the primary productivity tool in our daily lives. And as valuable as the smartphone is in our personal lives, it’s become just as important in the corporate world.
Large and small businesses alike have their employees using mobile devices for many of their day-to-day work functions. Enterprise use of smartphones and tablets isn’t limited to just the basic tasks of communication though; the adage “there’s an app for that” now rings true in the corporate environment. Businesses run inventory, enterprise resource planning (ERP), warehouse management, customer relationship management (CRM), order fulfillment, route accounting, expense tracking, and a whole host of other critical functions with mobile devices throughout the workforce. With the increased computing power and higher performing cameras in today’s smartphones, it’s not surprising that mobile phones have become effective barcode scanners as well.
The Cognex Barcode Scanners mobile application (available for both iOS and Android) demonstrates the power of the mobile device as a barcode reader. With support for more than 30 barcode types, the Barcode Scanners app can read just about any barcode in use today. The Barcode Scanners app can be used to examine the contents of a barcode, search the web, or launch the web browser for barcodes encoding a URL.
This application also includes advanced features like decoding industry standard formats (US and Canadian driver’s licenses, UPS® shipping labels, GS1 barcodes, and several others), continuous scanning, duplicate filtering, and zoom and illumination control.
The Barcode Scanners app is built using the Cognex Mobile Barcode Software Development Kit (SDK), Cognex’s enterprise-grade barcode reading software built specifically for mobile devices. The software development kit, available for both iOS and Android, is unique in the industry. Not only does it enable barcode scanning with a mobile phone or tablet, but it also works with any of the devices in the Cognex Mobile Solutions product line, including rugged, high-performing mobile terminals like the MX-1502ER and MX-1000. Application developers can write a single mobile app that can be used with a smartphone or tablet for light duty environments as well as with a mobile terminal when a more rugged device is needed for the warehouse, factory floor, or industrial job—all through a single, unified application programming interface (API).
